DUNES · sunset over the sand sea

Dune Sea at Sunset

The ridges are three stacked height fields: each a plane whose vertices sum a few sines of different frequencies, with larger amplitude and darker colour the further back it sits. The sun is an emissive disc pinned just behind the last ridge, and a warm fog eats into the distant sand — that untranslatable depth comes from this, not from a texture.

Why the ridges are offset

Give all three layers the same frequencies and the crests line up in a single row, which reads as stickers. Offset the frequency and phase per layer and the far crests rise out of the near troughs.
