Why no texture
An aurora texture is dead: move the camera and it reads as a decal. Here the vertices are recomputed every frame, so the folds shift with the viewpoint and the curtain has thickness up close.
AURORA · the tundra at night
The aurora is not a ribbon but a curtain pushed by the solar wind. Four curved sheets stack up here: each is a subdivided plane whose vertices are displaced by sines in time and space, coloured from teal-green low down to violet high up, blended additively — the sheets are out of phase, which reads as folds lifted by wind. The snow is a low-poly plain of gentle hills with a few ridge silhouettes behind; the stars stay fixed while only the aurora moves.
